9 ways to multiply your sales with eCommerce retargeting

Did you know that over 68% of shopping carts get abandoned online?

Don’t worry eCommerce retargeting can significantly improve those odds.

In this blog, we’re going to reveal some insider secrets that can help businesses of all sizes double their monthly sales.

What is retargeting?

Retargeting is a marketing strategy used by brands to reconnect with individuals who have previously interacted with their website, social media profiles, or other digital content. It involves displaying targeted advertisements to these individuals across various online platforms, to re-engage them and encourage them to take a specific action, such as making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter.

Here’s how retargeting typically works:

Key retargeting featuresDescription

Tracking

Whenever someone engages with your website, clicks on an advertisement, or uses your application, a small piece of code (such as a pixel) tracks their actions. This code doesn’t disclose any personal information but helps distinguish individual users.

Targeting

Using the collected tracking data, you can create specific groups of users based on their interactions with your brand.

Ad display

With these targeted user groups identified, you can display tailored ads across the social media platforms they frequent. These ads serve as reminders of your brand, offer enticing incentives, or highlight relevant products and services.

Types of eCommerce retargeting:

Here are some types of e-commerce retargeting:

  • Cart abandonment: Target users who left items in their cart without purchasing.
  • Product page: Show ads for viewed products to encourage purchase.
  • Cross-sell/upsell: Promote related products after a purchase.
  • Discounts/promotions: Offer special deals to entice users to buy.
  • Reactivation: Re-engage users who haven’t visited or purchased recently.
  • Dynamic: Display personalized ads based on past interactions.
  • Email: Send targeted emails to remind users of their abandoned carts or showcase product recommendations.

What are the differences between retargeting and remarketing?

While retargeting and remarketing are often used interchangeably, there are subtle differences between the two.

Feature

Retargeting

Remarketing

Definition

Retargeting primarily focuses on reaching users who have visited a specific website or interacted with a brand in some way, and to reconnect with past visitors or customers.

Remarketing, on the other hand, encompasses strategies primarily through personalized email campaigns

Purpose

To re-engage users who have shown interest in the brand or its products but have yet to complete a desired action, such as making a purchase.

To reconnect with users who have previously interacted with the brand and encourage them to take a specific action, such as completing a purchase or signing up for a newsletter.

Target audience

Users who have visited a specific website, viewed products, or interacted with digital content.

Users who have previously engaged with a brand’s website, social media profiles, or other digital channels.

Tracking method

Typically, it uses cookies or pixels to track user behavior and activities on a website.

Often relies on email addresses or contact information provided by users during previous interactions with the brand.

Conversion rate

Generally higher conversion rates as it targets users who have already shown interest in the brand or its products.

Conversion rates can vary depending on the remarketing campaign’s effectiveness and the messaging’s relevance to the target audience.

Ad-display

Utilizes targeted ads displayed across various online platforms, such as social media, search engines, and websites.

Primarily involves personalized email campaigns, although ads may also be displayed on websites, search engines, and social media platforms.

What is the best tool for retargeting?

The choice of the best tool for retargeting can vary depending on factors such as the specific needs of your business, budget constraints, and the platforms you wish to target.

However, one of the best retargeting platforms is Replug. It’s affordable and easy to use, and it goes beyond basic retargeting, offering functionalities like link cloaking, traffic routing, cross-platform conversion tracking, and much more.

  • Replug allows you to create specific campaigns designed for retargeting. Within this campaign, you can define which retargeting pixels you want to use.
  • The platform integrates with so many popular social platforms, that you can simply add the relevant pixel to your links.
  • Once you’ve set up your retargeting campaign with pixels, you can create shortened links as usual. When someone clicks on your Replug link, the retargeting pixel fires in the background, adding that user to your retargeting audience.

Top 9 eCommerce retargeting strategies to follow

1. Segment your audience

The first step is to identify key segments and customize your eCommerce retargeting campaigns to cater to the specific needs and interests of each segment.

For example, you might create separate ad campaigns targeting users who abandoned their carts versus users who browsed specific product categories but didn’t make a purchase.

2. Catchy ad copy

Eye-catching visuals are a must in eCommerce retargeting, but stunning images alone can’t seal the deal. Without a compelling message, your ads risk getting lost in the scroll.

Here’s where powerful copywriting takes center stage. Great copy grabs attention, ignites emotions, and motivates action. By incorporating these elements, your retargeting efforts won’t just reconnect with past visitors, they’ll turn them into authentic buyers.

3. Inject FOMO to boost last-minute sales

FOMO- eCommerce retargeting strategy

When done right, retargeting ads can lead to great conversion rates. But there’s always room for improvement. You can boost your conversion rates by adding a sense of urgency, like creating FOMO (fear of missing out).

This can be done with countdown timers, last-minute deals, or limited-time offers. When your audience sees that a popular product is available for a limited time, it triggers their impulse to buy. You can also customize your ads with countdown timers to make them feel more urgent.

4. Cross-sell new and existing products

This usually depends on the type of products you sell. However, there’s a good chance that some of your products will complement one another.

You can utilize both customer and sales data to come up with a list that targets particular purchases. Then, you’ll show your audience ads that might be a product that complements their purchase. Your ad should make the value of the purchase clear to their mind. Show them how these purchases will complement one another.

Offering relevant cross-sell suggestions demonstrates that you understand your customers’ needs and preferences. This personalized approach enhances the shopping experience, fostering customer satisfaction and loyalty.

5. Retarget based on the sensitivity of pricing

One of the main reasons people abandon their shopping carts is the high shipping costs and finding a better deal elsewhere via a competitor.

For instance, millennials are quite careful about spending on non-essentials and spending less than the generations before them. Now that you know you’re dealing with price-sensitive customers, you can win them over by targeting them based on less.

Free shipping- eCommerce retargeting

You can target those people who have left at a specific point in the checkout process. For instance, right before they pick out shipping options. You can then offer them free shipping or give them discounts to entice them to come back and make a purchase.

6. Adjust your retargeting ads’ frequency

Most people are quite receptive to eCommerce retargeting ads, just as long as you don’t overdo it. If some ads are frequently popping up, this can hurt the relationship between the brand and the customer.
Up to the point where the customer ends up frustrated with these ads because you’re someone intruding into their lives, in an almost creepy way.

7. Keep your content updated

Repeatedly using the same ad copies in your eCommerce retargeting campaign can quickly diminish its effectiveness. When your customers encounter these ads everywhere, they eventually tune them out, similar to how we overlook billboards or road signs.

This phenomenon, known as advertising blindness or banner blindness, reduces the impact of your messaging. To maintain engagement and combat this, it’s essential to keep your approach fresh by regularly updating your ads to capture your audience’s attention effectively.

8. A/B testing for optimization

Another way to increase eCommerce sales is by exploring diverse ad creatives, copies, and strategies using A/B testing. Experiment with variations to pinpoint what connects most effectively with your audience. If needed, develop new retargeted ads tailored to your user base. Test various elements such as headlines, images, and calls to action to fine-tune your retargeting strategy and enhance overall performance.

9. Monitor and analyze results

Regularly monitor the performance of your retargeting campaigns and analyze metrics such as click-through rates, conversion rates, and return on ad spend (ROAS) to identify areas for improvement and optimization.

Why eCommerce businesses should prioritize retargeting?

Ever lost a potential customer who browsed your website but left without buying anything? eCommerce retargeting can bring them back!

1. Cross-device retargeting

Shoppers often research across multiple devices – phones, laptops, tablets. Cross-device retargeting ensures your ads follow them easily, keeping your brand top-of-mind no matter which device they use.

2. Email remarketing

Email remarketing is a powerful strategy for eCommerce businesses to tackle one of their most common challenges: cart abandonment. By implementing follow-up pixels in their email campaigns, businesses can effectively reduce cart abandonment rates and increase conversions.

Highlight the abandoned products, offer targeted discounts to incentivize completion, and provide a clear path back to checkout for a seamless recovery experience.

3. Social media retargeting

Retargeting pixels placed on your website to track visitors and then display targeted ads on their social media feeds. These ads can feature products they browsed, similar items, or special promotions, increasing the chances of re-engagement and conversion.

Besides that here are some of the major benefits of retargeting:

  • Increased conversion rates: Retargeted ads have higher conversion rates compared to regular display ads since they target users with demonstrated interest.
  • Brand awareness: By maintaining a presence in front of potential customers, retargeting helps reinforce brand awareness and credibility.
  • Customization: eCommerce retargeting campaigns can be tailored based on users’ browsing behavior, ensuring relevant and timely messaging.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Retargeting ads increase brand search by 1046%. This helps you maximize the impact of the advertising budget by focusing on a warm audience.

2. Udemy

The next in line is Udemy,  If a user browses through Udemy’s course catalog but doesn’t enroll in any courses, Udemy may use browser retargeting to display targeted ads across other websites visited by the user.

How to create properly optimized URLs for SEO?

Manahil Asif
6 minutes

Struggling to create a properly optimized URL for your brand? No problem! We’ve put together this handy guide just for you. With our help, crafting SEO-friendly URLs is as simple as can be. Keep reading to find out how.

What is a properly optimized URL?

A properly optimized URL is one that’s crafted to make it simpler for users and search engines to understand the content of the webpage. It includes relevant keywords that accurately represent the page’s topic, making it easier for both users and search engines to understand the content. Additionally, a properly optimized URL is concise, readable, and free of unnecessary characters or parameters.

Why do URLs matter for SEO?

Optimized URLs that contain relevant keywords provide valuable signals to search engines about the content of the page, helping them rank it appropriately for relevant search queries.

Make sure that the Google crawler doesn’t say that

Optimze URL

Additionally, optimized URLs are more likely to be clicked on and shared by users, which can contribute to increased traffic and visibility for the website.

Here’s what Google says about URLs:

Create a simple URL structure. Consider organizing your content so that URLs are constructed logically and in a manner that is most intelligible to humans.
Consider using a robots.txt file to block Googlebot’s access to problematic URLs. Typically, consider blocking dynamic URLs, such as URLs that generate search results, or URLs that can create infinite spaces, such as calendars. Using regular expressions in your robots.txt file can allow you to easily block large numbers of URLs.
Wherever possible, avoid the use of session IDs in URLs. Consider using cookies instead.
If upper and lower case text in a URL is treated the same by the web server, convert all text to the same case so it is easier for Google to determine that URLs reference the same page.
Whenever possible, shorten URLs by trimming unnecessary parameters.
Check your site for broken links.

Take a look at some of these generic examples:

  1. Blog post

Here are some of the best URL practices for SEO

1. Include relevant keywords

The first and most important practice is to incorporate relevant keywords that accurately reflect your content. This practice helps search engines understand what your page is about, improving its visibility in search results. Be strategic in selecting keywords that align with your content and target audience to maximize SEO impact.

2. The short the better

Secondly go for concise URLs, ideally under 60 characters. Long URLs slugs can be confusing and hurt readability, potentially impacting user experience and click-through rates. Aim to convey the essence of your page’s content succinctly while maintaining clarity and relevance.

3. Use hyphens for separation

Separate words with hyphens (-) for better readability and keyword recognition. Avoid underscores or camel case, as hyphens are recognized as word separators by search engines. This helps improve indexing and ensures that each word in your URL is easily distinguishable.

4. Ditch stop words

Omit unnecessary words like “a,” “an,” “the,” and “of” as search engines tend to disregard them. While most people think it doesn’t matter but it does matter

properly optimize URL

5. Don’t stuff keywords

While it’s crucial to include relevant keywords, avoid overloading your URL with them unnaturally. Instead, prioritize clarity and incorporate keywords in a way that feels organic and contextually appropriate. Strike a balance between optimization and readability to enhance user experience and SEO strategy.

6. Maintain a proper structure

Organize your URL structure logically to reflect your website’s hierarchy and content organization. By aligning it with your website’s layout, you make it simpler for both people and search engines to find what they’re looking for.

A 301 redirect is like a helpful signpost, guiding users and search engines to the right destination when a URL is no longer valid. It tells both humans and bots that the content has permanently moved to a new location, preserving link equity and ensuring that visitors aren’t left stranded.

Redirect gif

By implementing 301 redirects for broken URLs, you’re not only saving lost traffic but also safeguarding your website’s SEO efforts.

8. Nix dynamic URLs

Steer clear of URLs containing dynamic parameters (e.g., “?pageid=123”). These can be confusing for search engines. Avoid those confusing URLs with random numbers and symbols.

9. Use lowercase letters

Search engines are not case-sensitive. So keep things consistent and easy on the eyes by using lowercase letters in your URLs. It’s like keeping your filing system neat and tidy—everything is where it should be.

10. Consider HTTPS

HTTPS Safety

Think of HTTPS as locking the doors to your website to keep it safe from intruders.

Not only does it boost security, but search engines also give a sense of approval, potentially boosting your site’s visibility.

11. Maintain consistency

Just like following a recipe, consistently organized website. Keep your URL slug structure consistent across the board for a smoother experience for both visitors and search engines.

What’s the best way to create SEO-friendly URLs?

How to see who clicks on your Instagram link?

Arslan Jadoon
4 minutes

If you’ve ever wondered who’s tapping on the links in your Instagram bio, you’re not alone. It’s a common question among users looking to understand their audience better and fine-tune their content strategy.

In this guide, We’ll uncover what you can (and can’t) glean from Instagram’s native data insights, and we’ll introduce you to a handy third-party tool that can give you a deeper dive into bio link clicks.

Whether you’re an aspiring influencer, a savvy entrepreneur, or just someone who loves sharing cool stuff on Instagram, understanding how to track bio link clicks is key to making the most of your social media presence. So, let’s dive in and discover the secrets to optimizing your bio links for maximum impact!

Instagram’s analytics tell you how many clicks your bio link gets and where they’re coming from, but it doesn’t tell you who exactly is clicking. You can see general info like age, gender, and location of the people clicking, but not their names or usernames.

So while you won’t know the specific individuals clicking on your link, you can still keep an eye on how well it’s doing overall and get a sense of who’s interested in your content based on the demographic info provided.

Limitations of Instagram insights

While Instagram Insight offers valuable data on bio link performance, it does come with certain limitations worth noting:

  1. Lack of individual click details: Instagram Insight only reveals the total number of clicks on your bio link, without specifying who clicked or providing any other individualized information.
  2. Absence of click-through rates: Although you can see the total clicks, Instagram doesn’t show how many people saw the link and decided to click. This omission makes it challenging to calculate click-through rates or compare link performance effectively.
  3. Limited demographic insights: While basic demographic data like age, gender, and location of link-clickers is available, it may not offer comprehensive insights into your target audience’s characteristics.
  4. Weekly reporting: Instagram Insight provides data every week, restricting real-time tracking or comparisons across different periods. For instance, comparing this month’s link performance to last month’s isn’t feasible within Instagram’s analytics framework.
  5. Exclusive to business accounts: Access to Instagram Insight for bio links is restricted to business accounts. This limitation may inconvenience individual users unwilling to switch or small businesses lacking the resources to manage a separate account.

What is a simplified URL?

A simple URL, a short or shortened URL, is a condensed version of a standard web address. It typically consists of fewer characters and is easier to remember and share. Simple URLs are often created using a URL shortener tool, which takes a long URL and generates a shorter, more manageable version. When clicked on, these shortened URLs redirect users to the original, longer URL.

They are commonly used in social media posts, email communications, and other situations where space or character count is limited, to make links more user-friendly and visually appealing.

How to use an affiliate link shortener: A quick guide

Arslan Jadoon
6 minutes

In the realm of online marketing, affiliate marketing has become a go-to strategy for many individuals and small businesses aiming to make some extra cash. It’s all about promoting other companies’ products or services through special referral links, known as affiliate links, and earning a commission when those links lead to sales.

If you’re already knee-deep in the affiliate marketing game, you know the struggle of dealing with those long, clunky affiliate links. They can be a real pain, right? But fear not! There’s a nifty little tool out there called an affiliate link shortener, and it’s here to make your life a whole lot easier.

In this quick guide, we’ll look at why using a link shortener is a smart move for savvy marketers like yourself. So, let’s dive in and discover why this tool might just be your new best friend in the world of affiliate marketing.

An affiliate link is more than just your average hyperlink. It’s a specially crafted URL that directs potential customers to a specific product or service offered online. At first glance, it appears like any other link you might stumble upon while browsing the web. However, what sets affiliate links apart is their ability to track the performance of marketers who promote them.

An affiliate link shortener is a handy tool designed to simplify and streamline lengthy affiliate links. It takes those sprawling URLs associated with affiliate marketing and condenses them into shorter, more manageable versions. These shortened links retain the same destination as the original affiliate links but are much cleaner and easier to share.

Besides making your links look nicer, affiliate link shorteners often offer additional features like click tracking and analytics. This means you can monitor how many people are clicking on your links and gauge the effectiveness of your marketing efforts.

Affiliate links are the backbone of affiliate marketing, serving as pathways between marketers and the products or services they endorse. Here’s a breakdown of their functionality:

Affiliate links are generated by affiliates themselves or through specialized affiliate marketing apps. These links direct users to the product or service being promoted. When someone clicks on an affiliate link and subsequently makes a purchase, the vendor can identify the source of the referral through a unique ID.

This attribution enables the vendor to credit the sale to the affiliate who directed the customer to their product or service. As a result, affiliates earn a commission based on the specific program’s terms.

Making use of affiliate networks

Affiliate marketing networks serve as intermediaries between content creators and companies offering affiliate programs. Here’s how to make the most of them:

  • Strategic program selection

Identify your target audience and select an affiliate program that aligns with your interests. Prioritize relevance over commission rates to ensure successful partnerships.

  • Streamlined access

Joining an affiliate network grants access to a diverse array of programs, simplifying the process of finding suitable products to promote.

Tracking the performance of affiliate links is crucial for optimizing marketing strategies. Tools like Replug make it easy to monitor the engagement and effectiveness of affiliate links.

With Replug, marketers can track multiple links from a centralized platform, enabling informed decision-making.

How to Create an RSS Video Feed Using Replug?

Arslan Jadoon
5 minutes

In this age of information overload, staying connected with your audience requires innovative approaches. One such method is using the power of RSS feeds to distribute your video content effectively. In this guide, we’ll explore the process of creating an RSS video feed using Replug, a versatile tool designed to enhance your online presence and streamline content distribution.

Let’s delve into the steps to utilize Replug’s capabilities and unlock the potential of your video content.

What is an RSS video feed?

An RSS video feed is a structured XML file that contains information about video content, such as titles, descriptions, publication dates, and URLs. It allows content creators to syndicate video content in a standardized format that various platforms and applications can easily consume.

Think of it as a channel through which your video content is distributed to subscribers or viewers who use RSS feed readers or aggregators. Instead of manually visiting websites or platforms to check for new videos, users can subscribe to RSS video feeds and receive updates automatically whenever new content is published.

How to create an RSS video feed in Replug?

To create an RSS video feed using Replug, you’ll need to add the URL of the video content you want to include in your RSS feed. This could be the direct link to your videos hosted on platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, or your website.

Here’s how to create an RSS video feed using Replug:

Step 1: Log in to your Replug account. If you’re new, sign up for a free account to get started.

replug - link management

Step 2: Once logged in, navigate to the dashboard area. Hover over the “Manage” tab and select “RSS Automation” from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: In the RSS Automation section, find the “Add RSS Feed” button at the top left corner of the screen. Click on it to proceed.

Step 4: A pop-up window will appear asking you to select your campaign and enter the RSS feed URL. Choose the campaign you want and paste the RSS video feed URL into the provided field. Click “Add” to complete this step.

After following these steps, your RSS feed will be successfully created. You can then copy the RSS feed URL provided and add it to any third-party platform or use it to distribute your content.

Additionally, once your RSS feed is created, you have several actions you can take:

  • Edit: Update or change the added RSS feed whenever necessary.
  • Re-crawl: Instantly re-crawl your entire RSS feed to fetch any new links that have been added.
  • Preview: View a list of posts from the RSS feeds that have been converted.
  • Remove: Remove your RSS feed to create a new one or perform other actions.

These options allow you to manage and customize your RSS feed widget according to your preferences and needs.

For example, instead of facebook.com/page/123456789, you could have facebook.com/YourPageName.

Arslan Jadoon

Maximize your LinkedIn impact with a simple move: the LinkedIn URL shortener. With a whopping 900 million members worldwide, LinkedIn is the heavyweight champ of professional networking. Whether you’re job hunting or representing your business, engagement is your golden ticket.

This guide explores the potential of LinkedIn short links to expand your audience and drive exceptional engagement. Let’s get started!

What is a LinkedIn URL shortener?

A LinkedIn URL shortener is a tool, like Replug, that transforms your lengthy and often unclear LinkedIn URLs into shorter, more user-friendly ones. Instead of sharing a cumbersome link, you get a concise and recognizable address.

LinkedIn itself provides a basic link-shortening service for customizing and potentially shortening your public profile URL. You can use the “edit public profile & URL” button for this.

However, it’s important to note that LinkedIn’s native service has limitations. While it can create a short link to your profile, it doesn’t offer the additional benefits you get from more robust URL-shortening services like Replug.

  • Audience-Builders: Growing your professional audience? Short links (on or off LinkedIn) leading to your content or profile provide a sleek and analytics-rich way to attract viewers.
  • Brands and Recruiters: Share links to job posts or company pages effortlessly. Short links offer more space, cleaner lines, and increased opportunities to establish your brand.

1. Trust and professionalism:

Short, identifiable links, especially branded ones, instill higher trust and professionalism. On LinkedIn, where credibility matters, a clean link boosts the likelihood of click-throughs.

Personalized and shortened LinkedIn profile URLs, like /ProTechAnalyst, create a professional and memorable image. Whether a brand or an individual, a tidy URL enhances your online presence.

Shortened links increase click-through rates as they are more recognizable and preferable to lengthy, complex URLs. Branded links, in particular, attract up to 17% more clicks, proving their effectiveness.

How to Send a Tracking Link in 7 Simple Steps?

Understanding how your audience interacts with your content is key to success. That’s where link tracking comes in. In this guide, we’ll explore the power of tracking URLs—revealing not only the success of your marketing campaigns but also insights into customer behavior.

Plus, we’ll walk you through the steps on how to create and send tracking links, enabling you to harness the full potential of this invaluable tool. Get ready to elevate your communication strategies and enhance your digital presence through the actionable insights link tracking provides. Let’s get started!

A tracking link is a powerful tool that provides insights into customer activity based on marketing campaigns. It serves to manage and measure the effectiveness of various marketing activities, channels, and campaigns.

Utilizing tracking links is recommended whenever directing traffic from external sources such as banner ads, PPC campaigns, email, or social media to a landing page or website.

These links resemble regular URLs but include added tags known as parameters at the end. These parameters offer valuable information about the visitor’s origin, the specific content they clicked through, and the associated campaign.

For example:

http://www.example.com/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=spring_sale

In this example, the URL is a tracking link, and the parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign) provide details about the traffic source, medium, and campaign, respectively.

Replug makes creating and sending tracking links easy, especially when dealing with the potential length of these links. URL shortening for tracking purposes becomes swift and straightforward with Replug.

A tracking link works by incorporating a distinctive code into a URL, enabling the monitoring of customer interactions. UTM parameters like campaign, source, and medium offer specific details.

Key components of tracking tags and UTM codes include:

Campaign: Reflects the type of campaign being executed. For instance, a UTM code for a promotion might appear as utm_campaign=free_gift.

Source: Identifies the channel from which the person originated. A UTM code for the source could be utm_source=cpc.

Medium: Represents the broader category of how the traffic was generated, such as social media or email. A UTM code for medium might appear as utm_medium=email.

These are fundamental parameters, and marketers can incorporate additional details beyond these examples. Setting parameters allows for precise tracking of customer activity, such as clicks and engagements, for each unique link.

For instance, if you’re directing your audience to a landing page through campaigns on an affiliate blog, Google paid ads, and your company newsletter, each tracking link would appear different, despite leading to the same page:

  • Affiliate blog: http://www.example.com/?utm_source=affiliate&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=20_off
  • Google paid ads: http://www.example.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=summer_sale
  • Company newsletter: http://www.example.com/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=free_gift

These links assist in tracking user engagement, providing insights into the effectiveness of different marketing channels.

URL Branding: Enhance Digital Brand Marketing with Replug

Hassaan Khan

What is URL branding?

URL branding is a custom short URL that brands use across different digital marketing avenues instead of their main URL. In simple words, it’s a short and sweet version of the domains that are easy to write, send, and remember.

Businesses, influencers, and entrepreneurs strive to dominate the digital marketing space and branding turns out to be an important part of the marketing arsenal.

Branding is everything a brand creates to get recognized in the market or stand out from the competition. It’s a combination of multiple things, such as logos, fonts, color schemes, design patterns, slogans, etc.

So, when a brand creates a custom brandable domain for marketing, engagement, or clickability, it’s called URL branding.

pepsi branded link

Brands create short and branded URLs for social media, email marketing, and online advertising. The reason why companies opt for URL branding is that it’s short, brandable, and memorable, which makes marketing and engagement easier than ever.

Thus, it makes it convenient for companies and marketers to distribute, track, and analyze their short links.

Does it sound interesting to you?

Let’s dig deeper into this!

Why is URL branding important?

branded short links

The competition is fierce in most online marketing areas, regardless of the industry. The pressure to build, establish, and grow a business is inevitable. So, business owners look out for any competitive edge that helps them ignite their business growth.

Branding, in any shape or form, does wonders for brands if done right. URL branding is a digital marketing strategy businesses adopt to shorten their long and clunky website URLs and use the short versions for print and digital marketing. The short URL redirects the visitors to the main URL, anyway.

To better understand “why” URL branding is important, it’s vital to look at the benefits it provides, what impact it adds to the digital marketing strategy, and why it’s better than unbranded URLs.

Let’s get into it.

Branded vs. Unbranded URL

Branded URLs are comparatively better than unbranded URLs. When brands use unbranded URLs, it means they’re using random URL shorteners or long and clunky URLs.

As a result, it doesn’t make much impact. These brands lose some engagement opportunities when they use unbranded URLs.

On the flip side, companies and influencers that use branded URLs cash in on the branding opportunities. The reason is that branded URLs are the short versions of their main domains, which does help in building brand recognition.

Most businesses opt for unbranded URLs because they don’t want any additional cost, so they rely on free URL shorteners or default long URLs.

All in all, branded URLs have several perks that make them better than unbranded URLs. However, for branded URLs, a brand needs to register a short domain and buy a link management tool’s subscription to create branded URLs.

5 key reasons to use branded URLs

Branded Links in Replug

There are numerous reasons to use branded URLs. Take a look at some of them:

1. Showcases brand authority

Branding authority means brand reputation. It’s a multi-dimensional element that brands earn over time with their strategies, commitment, policies, and quality.

Branded URLs may seem like an ordinary digital branding strategy, but it does have implications beyond the digital marketing campaign. It creates an impact when a company or influencer uses a short, branded URL on social media, email newsletter, or print media.

So, a brand, a short domain helps contribute to establishing brand authority for businesses and individuals.

2. Adds trustworthiness

One of the benefits of a branded URL is that it provides companies and entrepreneurs an opportunity to earn trust in the digital marketing space. The reason is that every brand out there doesn’t go above and beyond to build an impactful brand image.

Creating branded URLs for social media and email marketing campaigns showcases that a business takes every part of the process seriously. That’s why they have put the work into coming up with branded URLs.

3. Helps in brand positioning

Brand positioning is how a brand creates its perception in the prospects and customers’ minds. Since branded URLs bring authority and trustworthiness to the brand’s campaign, they help businesses position their brands better.

Creating a positive perception of a business is an essential part of the branding strategy. A branded URL does help companies in positioning their brands in the eyes of their target audiences.

4. Drives traffic from print and digital sources

Website visitors mean business for most SAAS businesses and e-commerce stores. Since website traffic is the bread and butter of such businesses, they try to capitalize on every opportunity to drive visitors to their websites.

An important aspect of branded URLs is that they can drive website traffic rather easily. Brands and influencers come up with short, branded URLs for print media such as business cards, letterheads, pamphlets, and digital mediums like email, social media, etc.

5. Makes the URL memorable

Branding is essentially a process of creating perception and brand identity. Therefore, the website URL does have its role in making that brand identity.

One of the benefits of branded URLs is that they’re easy to remember, which helps brands and influencers in driving website traffic without putting out the main URL.

Importance of URLs as a digital strategy

SEO Optimized Vanity URL

Do URLs matter? You might want to know what this fuss is all about. Well, URLs are important for every digital marketing campaign. And, if you’re focusing on optimizing, fixing, and managing URLs, then digital marketing strategy is at stake.

Let’s jump into the importance of URLs in digital strategy and understand why URLs matter so much.

1. On-page SEO optimization

SEO is an integral part of any digital marketing campaign, and on-page SEO optimization is always incomplete without creating an SEO-friendly URL structure.

On-page SEO refers to the website page optimization process that takes place on the website page instead of outside the website. It includes URL refining, content optimization, keyword insertion, image optimization, page loading speed improvement, and fixing the website copy.

The reason why on-page SEO optimization is crucial to a digital strategy is that a brand can’t dominate the SERP or beat the competition in the search engines if its website isn’t optimized from the search engine standpoint.

Ultimately, URLs should be short, sweet, and relevant to improve the SEO performance of a website. Make sure that there are no broken links, the sitemap is up and running, and the website is hosted on a reputable web host to ensure that everything is going in the right direction.

2. URL redirection setup

SEO experts might be able to write multiple chapters on the importance of URLs in their SEO books, meaning URLs are vital to the SEO game. A well-developed URL structure can drive an SEO strategy to new heights, which takes the brand’s digital strategy to the next level.

URL redirection is a process of directing website visitors from one page to another using URL redirection codes or plugins. In simple words, when a redirection is set up, the visitor automatically moves to the new page when landing on the older page.

URL redirection is key in several cases, for instance, you have deleted older blog posts and redirected the visitors to the newer versions of the blog posts or a company has rebranded into a different brand name and redirected the traffic to the new domain.

So, the importance of URL management is pretty clear in the URL redirection process, and most brands on the internet have to deal with URLs in their digital marketing campaign.

3. Driving social media traffic

One of the aspects of URLs that can’t be ignored is that they provide a roadmap to the website traffic to land on the website pages no matter the traffic source.

Besides the organic visitors from search engines, social media traffic also lands on the website pages using the URLs. Similarly, email marketing also drives website visitors to the landing page or blog posts – all of these traffic sources use URLs to drive traffic.

Clunky or dysfunctional URLs may create hurdles in driving both free and paid traffic to the website. Therefore, it’s essential to keep the URL structure clean and optimized to keep the flow of website traffic from social media and other sources smooth and effective.

3. Improving click-through rate

URLs are the medium of driving website traffic to the website pages regardless of the traffic source. Understanding the importance of URLs and implementing optimization techniques steer the digital strategy of a brand in the right direction.

Click-through rate (CTR) is a clickability metric that showcases the performance of a specific page URL or the overall website URL. In other words, it tells us the number of clicks the page or website has gotten from a specific source, such as Google or Facebook ads. To get the CTR, divide the total clicks by the total impressions.

Moreover, URL optimization is vital to improving the ranking and click-through rate in the SERP. It essentially contributes to the overall search engine optimization of the website.

CTR analysis and other link management operations may not be possible if URLs aren’t a part of the digital strategy of the brand.

4. URL tracking and reporting

URL tracking and reporting means taking a look at the URLs’ performance in the website analytics tool’s dashboard, such as Google Search Console or Usermaven.

Tracking URL wouldn’t have been possible without comprehending the importance of URLs while establishing an effective digital marketing strategy.

So, don’t sleep on the opportunities to analyze the website page’s performance as part of your digital marketing and branding strategy.

The above-mentioned points explain the importance of URLs in the wake of building a powerful digital strategy for a brand.

5 Examples of a URL branding

How do I create a branded URL?

Are you wondering how to create a custom short URL or integrate your branded URL with your URL shortening tool?

Well, it’s not rocket science. All you need is to follow the below-mentioned steps and you’ll be all set to create your short, branded URLs within no time. Let’s cut to the chase and see how you can set a branded URL:

Here are the steps involved in creating a branded URL:

Get a domain for branded URLs

Already have branded domain then move on to the next step.

If not then….

Start with buying domain. It’ll be the first step in the process regardless of the URL shortening tool you use for setting your branded URL. Once registered, move on to the next step.

Connect your domain to your URL shortener

You’ll need a URL shortener to connect your domain to generate branded short URLs.

Since Replug is my favorite link management tool, I’ll be using this tool to showcase how you can create branded URLs for social media, paid ads, and email marketing.

Before you head over to the Replug dashboard, you must first connect your domain to the URL shortener.

Keep in mind that it’s a two-step process that involves configuring the DNS records and adding the custom domain to the Replug account.

DNS-Record-

Go to your domain registrar account and access the DNS record for your domain.

Click-Add- A- New- Record

Look out for the option named “Add New Record” to configure the DNS settings.

CNAME-record

You might want to choose the CNAME record in your domain setting to configure it with your Replug account. To do so, click on the “Add New Record” option to include a new record.

Here are the exact DNS settings you should be adding to the DNS record:

Record Type CNAME
Hostname@ or www
Point to (Address)Short domain (URL)

Make sure that the DNS settings are properly added. Once it’s done, head over to your Replug account to complete the process.

Add your domain to your Replug account

Once you have created the Replug account, log in to it to continue setting up the branded URL.

custom-domain

Now, head over to the custom domain configuration in your Replug account. To access the custom domain section, just click on your Replug profile icon inside the dashboard.

A drop-down menu will pop up, click on “Custom Domains” to access the custom domains section. This is the area where you would add a custom domain to your Replug account.

Add-a-Cutsom-Domain

Click on the “Add Domain” button to add your short domain to your Replug account. A form would pop up, so fill up the form.

Add-custom-domain-1

You’ll need to provide your branded URL, custom 404 redirection page URL, and main root URL for setting the short domain in your Replug account.

Create a brand & Campaign to get started with URL branding

Once the short domain is properly configured in your Replug account, you can create a brand and set up link management campaigns.

Note: It’s essential to create a separate brand. Otherwise, the shortened URLs will be assigned to a previously created brand in your account.

Brands

To create a new brand in the Replug account, go to the “Manage” section from the Replug dashboard and click on the “Brands” option from the drop-down menu.

Once you’ve landed on the brand’s page, click on the “New Brand” option to create one.

create-brand

Once you click on the “New Brand” button, a pop-up menu will appear. Provide all the necessary details about the brand, such as the brand name and the website URL.

Once you’re done with it, press the “Save” button to proceed. That’s how you can create a new brand in the Replug account.

The next up is creating a new campaign using the brand you just added to your Replug account.

Go to the “Manage” section from the top menu, and access the “Campaigns” section.

new campaign

To create the campaign, click on the “New Campaign” button on the page.

brand and next

Now, select the newly created brand for this very campaign.

Campaign-type-1

The next step is to enter your campaign name, your domain and campaign type.

Once you complete the above, then “Save Campaign”.

What is a Custom URL & How to Create One?

Brands and entrepreneurs try to milk every engagement opportunity on the internet whether it’s social media, email, or paid ads.

The ultimate goal of all the attention-grabbing techniques is to convert the lead into a paying customer.

Therefore, a lot of brainstorming and effort goes into making that happen – they improve UI/UX, A/B test color schemes, improve call-to-actions, optimize on-page SEO, and much more.

One of the things that most marketers, bloggers, and small businesses undermine is the custom URL.

You may have heard about the custom URLs in a YouTube video or an article about link management or URL shortening.

Well, let’s try to crack open this topic and understand what custom URLs are and why they’re worth paying attention to in digital marketing.

What are custom URLs?

Custom URLs are customized, better-looking alternative URLs that replace long and clunky website URLs for engagement, click-through rate, and conversion.

Most e-commerce websites don’t have optimized product page URLs, which affects their SEO performance. The reason is that the URL structure plays a vital role in the website ranking.

Some brands use branded, short URLs in their link management to improve CTR and conversion across different mediums. These types of URLs are used in email newsletters, social media publishing, and marketing pamphlets.

Custom or vanity URLs are an essential part of the social media marketing and SEO campaign. Digital marketers and SEOs pay close attention to adding targeted keywords in their URL slugs.

You may have noticed that brands and influencers share social media content with a short URL that has a campaign URL slug attached to it. This URL slug is different from URL parameters that are added to the URLs for tracking the URL performance.

The custom URLs are beneficial from both branding and SEO aspects of digital marketing. Brands could customize their short URLs by adding short branded domains for URL shortening as well as creating custom URLs for social media and email marketing campaigns.

Best practices for using custom URLs

Have you ever wondered what goes into creating fancy and attractive custom URLs? Using vanity or custom URLs is a common digital marketing practice that helps brands build brand reputation and identity.

However, there are a few things to know before you create a bunch of custom URLs for a social media marketing campaign. Let’s discuss some of the best practices that will help you navigate the custom URL creation process with ease:

i. Use a short domain for custom URLs

There is no point in putting effort into setting up a custom URL with a large URL. A custom URL has to be short and sweet. Otherwise, it won’t make an impact. Brands and entrepreneurs get creative with using the short versions of their names or finding the short domain extensions. (Example: garyvee.com)

ii. Opt for a brandable custom domain

Choosing a random custom domain for your custom URLs won’t be a wise decision. It has to be relevant to your brand name so that it elevates your brand identity. Since branding is a major factor in custom domains, the custom URLs must have your brand name’s infusion. Go for a custom domain that is either a short version of your brand name or using the initials of the company name. (Example: amzn.com)

iii. Register your domain with a short, relevant extension

Custom domains aren’t just about the domain names or URL slugs – the extensions matter too. A lot of brands use .io, .se, .co, and other short domain extensions for their custom URLs. However, it’s not the rule; you can go for a .com or .net if you want to but make sure that the domain name is short and relevant.

iv. Choose a URL shortener with a custom domain feature

Find a URL shortener with a custom domain feature for your brand’s link management. What it means is that the URL shortener must have a feature to add a custom domain to your account for creating brandable short URLs. Most of the URL shorteners on the market lack this feature, anyway, but don’t worry because we have your back.

Replug is a powerful link management tool that provides URL shortening, branded custom URLs, bio links, UTM codes, deep links, and several other link management services. Try it for free!

v. Avoid spamming on social media with your URLs

One of the best practices of using custom URLs is that you might not want to spam all over social media. The reason is that social media platforms could detect spamming and ban or limit your URL. As a result, you may not be able to post your short URLs or the reach could fall flat. So be very careful with your posting frequency and write a commentary on others’ content with messages containing your links.

These were some of the best practices for using custom URLs for brands, influencers, and small businesses that want to cash in on the short, custom URLs.

How to create a custom domain?

In the context of custom URLs, creating a custom domain refers to the process of registering, propagating, and connecting the short URL with the link management tool of your choice.

Since my favorite URL shortener is Replug, I’ll be using this link management tool for this process. However, you can opt for a different tool if you want to, but I highly recommend trying Replug for free.

So let’s get into the step-by-step process of creating a custom domain:

Step 1: Register a custom domain

Domain registration is the first step toward setting up a custom domain no matter what tool you choose to set up the whole thing. So go on with registering a short and sweet domain for your brand.

Keep in mind that most brands pick the short version of their brand name to register for setting up their short domain. Similarly, it’s wise to opt for a two-letter domain extension to keep the URL as short as possible, such as .co, .io, .se, and others.

So to register your custom domain, go to your domain registrar service to check the domain availability and register the domain.

register-a-custom-domain

I have been registering my domains on Namecheap for over a decade. You can check out other domain registrars if you want to. However, the prices are pretty much the same across all registrars.

Step 2: Propagate the custom domain with Replug

Once the domain registration has been done, head over to the custom domain configuration with Replug. Pay close attention to this two-step process to make it work.

The first step toward this configuration is the DNS records updating. So add the DNS records for your custom domain to configure it with Replug.

To get started with DNS records updating, go to your domain registrar account and look out for the desired domain’s DNS settings.

dns-setting

Find the option named “Add New Record” or “Add Record,” to configure the DNS settings.

Now add a CNAME record in your domain setting to configure it with your Replug account.

cName-record

Click on the “Add New Record” option to include a new record. Add the following details:

  • Record Type: CNAME
  • Hostname: @ or www
  • Point to (Address): Your short domain (URL)

Adding the DNS settings is half the equation – the next half of the process happens in your Replug dashboard.

Step 3: Add the custom domain to your Replug account

When the DNS setting is done, go to the Replug account to add the custom domain to your Replug account.

When logged in to your Replug account open the drop-down settings menu from the top right corner by clicking on your profile button.

Head over to the Custom Domains section and click on the Add Domain option to add a custom domain to your account.

It’s time to provide your short custom domain to connect it to your Replug account. So fill up the form with your branded URL, custom 404 redirection page URL, and main root URL.

Step 4: Create a new brand in your Replug account

Creating a brand in the Replug account is necessary to keep track of brand-level link performance. Otherwise, the shortened URLs will be assigned to a previously created brand in your account.

So once you have configured the custom domain with your Replug account, the next up is to add a new brand to your Replug account.

To create a brand in the Replug account, go to the Manage section and click on the Brands option from the drop-down menu.

add-new-brand

This is the area where you add a new brand. Choose the “New Brand” option to create one.

After clicking on the “New Brand” button, a pop-up menu would show up. Feel free to enter the brand name and website URL. Once it’s done, press the Save button to proceed.

This way, you’ll have successfully created a new brand in the Replug account.

new-campaign

Now click on the New Campaign button on the page to create a new campaign. The next up is selecting the right brand for this campaign. Therefore, select the brand you just created for this campaign.

campaign-setup

Now choose the campaign type. It’s important to pay attention to this part as you must select the appropriate custom domain for the campaign.

campaign-setup

Write down the name of your campaign and opt for the right short domain you just added.

Don’t forget to save the campaign once you have added all the details.

Using shortened links for Instagram can significantly enhance your marketing efforts, and here’s why:

  1. Attractiveness and memorability:

In a platform where visual aesthetics are paramount, excessively long links in Instagram captions can detract from the impact of your carefully curated content. Lengthy links can make your posts appear unprofessional and cluttered. Shortened links are not only visually pleasing but also more memorable.

By utilizing a link shortener, you can refine your links, making them more attractive and easier for your audience to remember.

  1. Brand-friendly URLs:

Trust is the foundation of any relationship, and this holds true for the links you share. Using branded links, also known as vanity URLs, not only enhances transparency by clearly conveying information about your brand or products, but it also boosts brand recall. Branded links make your content more appealing and trustworthy.

Studies have shown that custom-branded links receive 39% more clicks than unbranded ones, underlining their effectiveness in marketing.

  1. Trackability with Replug:

Replug, depending on your subscription provides access to click statistics. Replug’s click data dashboard offers valuable insights into the performance of your links, including the number of clicks, their origin, and when users visited your links.

This data empowers you to understand your audience beyond Instagram, helping you identify followers in previously unconsidered regions. By combining Replug’s insights with Instagram’s own analytics, you gain a comprehensive overview of your audience, enabling more informed marketing decisions.

How to Shrink a Link: Step-by-Step Guide

Arslan Jadoon

Have you ever wondered how to transform those endless, complicated web addresses into neat and shareable links? You’re in the right place. We’re here to not only explain what link shrinking is but also guide you on how to do it. It’s a useful method for sharing links on social media, emails, or printed materials.

The process is quite simple: just copy your lengthy URL, paste it into a link-shortening tool, and there you go – you’ll receive a shorter, more convenient link that you can easily share. Let’s get started!

Link shrinking, often referred to as URL shortening, is the process of converting a long, unwieldy web address (URL) into a shorter, more streamlined version. This short link is designed for greater convenience, ease of sharing, and improved user experience. It is widely employed in digital communication and marketing to simplify the presentation and distribution of web links.

For example:

A lengthy URL looks like this:

This is how it might look after shortening or shrinking:

The primary difference between a shorter link and a branded link lies in their structure and purpose:

  • A shrink or shorter link is a compact, generic URL that’s created to make a long and unwieldy web address more concise. This is typically done using link-shortening services like Replug or Bitly.
  • Shrink links are shorter in length and are easier to share, especially on platforms with character limits, such as Twitter.
  • They often use a generic domain (e.g., rplg.co) followed by a series of random characters or a short identifier.
  • Shrink links are primarily used for convenience and brevity.
  • A branded link, also known as a custom or vanity link, is a URL that incorporates a specific brand or organization’s name or keyword into the link itself.
  • Branded links use a domain associated with the brand, making them instantly recognizable and trustworthy.
  • Branded links are used to enhance brand recognition, trust, and user engagement. They help users easily identify the source of the link and can be a part of a company’s branding strategy.

What are UTM Codes and How Do They Work?

Arslan Jadoon
4 minutes

Marketing can be complex, but measuring its effectiveness doesn’t have to be. UTM codes are your answer to understanding what’s working and what’s not in your campaigns and, more importantly, to pinpoint which campaigns are doing the heavy lifting. This is where UTM codes come into play, offering a simple solution to the challenge of marketing success. So, let’s break it down:

What are UTM codes?

UTM codes are essentially strings of text that are added to URLs. These strings contain specific parameters that provide invaluable information about the source, medium, and campaign that led a user to a particular webpage. In other words, UTM parameters act as data markers, offering a clearer view of the user’s journey, from the initial interaction to conversion.

Here’s a breakdown of the key UTM parameters:

  1. Source:

This parameter specifies the origin of your traffic. Is it coming from an email, a social media platform, a search engine, or another source? Accurately tagging the source helps you identify which channels are driving the most traffic.

  1. Medium:

The medium parameter describes the type of marketing medium used. It could be an email, social, organic search, paid search, or any other medium relevant to your campaign. Categorizing your traffic in this way allows you to determine which marketing avenues are the most effective.

  1. Campaign:

The campaign parameter enables you to track a specific marketing campaign or initiative. Whether it’s a product launch, a seasonal promotion, or an event, this parameter helps you differentiate between different efforts within the same source and medium.

  1. Term (optional):

This parameter is often used for paid search campaigns to identify the keywords that triggered the ad click. It’s an optional parameter and is mainly relevant to search engine advertising.

  1. Content (optional):

Another optional parameter, content can be used to differentiate between different elements of your marketing efforts, such as different ad variations or links within the same campaign.

Understand with an example:

Let’s create an example URL with UTM parameters added.

Original URL:

https://www.example.com/product-page

Now, let’s add UTM parameters to track the source, medium, and campaign:

  • Source: Let’s say the traffic is coming from an email newsletter.
  • Medium: The marketing medium is email.
  • Campaign: It’s part of a campaign called “SummerPromo.”

Now, we’ll add these UTM parameters to the URL:

https://www.example.com/product-page?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=SummerPromo

With these UTM parameters added, you can track that anyone who clicks on this URL is coming from the source “email,” through the medium “email,” and as part of the “SummerPromo” campaign. This allows you to monitor the performance of this specific link in your marketing efforts.

How to create UTM tracking codes?

Creating UTM tracking codes is a pivotal part of monitoring the performance of your online marketing efforts. While it’s technically possible to manually create these codes by adding specific strings to your URLs, it can be complex and time-consuming, especially when you have to manage them at scale. This is where UTM code generators come into play, making the process much more efficient.

Google Analytics URL builder:

Google Analytics offers a straightforward UTM code generator, which has become the go-to choice for many businesses. Here’s how you can use it:

  1. Visit Google’s URL Builder tool.
  2. Fill in the required fields for your campaign: the URL of the landing page, source, medium, campaign, term (optional), and content (optional).
  3. Click “Generate URL,” and Google will create the UTM-coded URL for you.

Replug – A convenient alternative:

Replug is another powerful tool for UTM code creation, and here’s why it’s worth considering:

  • Automatic UTM code generation:

Replug automates the UTM code creation process, saving you the trouble of manual entry. This means you can gather valuable analytics data as soon as your campaign goes live.

  • Shortened and customized URLs:

UTM-coded URLs can become quite lengthy, which can be a problem on platforms like Instagram or when users need to copy and paste links. Replug shortens and customizes these URLs, making them more elegant and user-friendly.

For example, a long UTM-coded URL might look like this:

https://replug.io/pages/resources/blogs/influencermarketing?&utm_source=contentdigest&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ebook-influencer-marketing&leadchannel=email&leadchanneldetail=contentdigest

With Replug, it could be as sleek as this:

While preserving all the essential UTM data.

How to Increase Click-Through Rate (CTR) using Branded Links?

Arslan Jadoon
3 minutes

Driving traffic to your content is essential for success in the digital age. Whether you’re sharing content on social media, in emails, or through advertisements, your click-through rate (CTR) is a critical metric that directly impacts your online presence.

While there’s plenty of advice on improving CTR through content optimization, one often overlooked factor is the link itself. In this article, we’ll explore how branded links can significantly enhance your CTR.

Understanding CTR

Before diving into the world of branded links, let’s establish a clear understanding of CTR. Click-through rate (CTR) is a vital metric in online marketing, expressed as a percentage. It’s the number of times a link is clicked divided by the number of times it’s viewed. Simply put, if your link gets ten views and one click, your CTR is 10%. Now, let’s delve into why CTR is so crucial.

click-through-rate-CTR

Imagine you’ve crafted a groundbreaking piece of content that has the potential to change lives, but no one reads it. The quality of your content will only matter if it reaches your target audience. Your link is the bridge that connects your audience to your content, making CTR a make-or-break factor.

Branded links, also known as vanity URLs or custom short links, are URLs that have been customized to include a specific brand’s name or a relevant keyword. Unlike generic, lengthy, or complex URLs, branded links are shorter, more descriptive, and often feature the brand’s domain name or a recognizable keyword, making them more user-friendly and visually appealing.

Branded Link:

Let’s explore how you can leverage branded links to optimize your CTR.

  1. Include your brand name in the link:

The domain is the first element of your link, and it’s imperative to include your brand name. Many people use link-shortening tools for brevity, but this often obscures the brand name. Branded links, also known as vanity URLs, remedy this by showcasing your brand, increasing trust, and building brand awareness. Studies show that branded links can boost CTR by up to 39%.

  1. Use a unique top-level domain (TLD):

After your domain, the choice of Top-Level Domain (TLD) can impact CTR. New TLDs can help your link stand out and convey relevance. For instance, using “.tech” for tech-related content or “.store” for online retail adds clarity and can attract more clicks.

  1. Include a keyword:

The URL slug, the part that comes after the slash, is an essential component of SEO. Branded links allow you to choose your keywords, ensuring your link’s relevance and SEO-friendliness. This customization can set you apart from generic shorteners that offer limited options.

  1. Consider link length:

Long URLs can hinder readability and may be truncated on social media. Short, concise links are more appealing to users. Keep it simple to maintain interest and encourage clicks.

  1. Use “https://” for secure links:

‘Https://’ before a URL signifies a secure connection with SSL certification, which builds trust in your brand’s links. Additionally, Google favors ‘https://’ sites in its search rankings, giving you an SEO boost.

  1. Make sure you keep your word:

Ensure that the content behind your links aligns with the promise you make in your branded link. Consistency builds trust, and trustworthy links are more likely to be clicked repeatedly.

  1. Make them memorable:

Branded links are inherently memorable, making them shareable offline and over various mediums. Memorability boosts CTR, as people can easily recall and revisit the links.

What is a Tracking URL and How to Create One?

Arslan Jadoon
5 minutes

Tracking URLs are special web links that help you track where your website visitors come from, especially when they click on links from your marketing efforts.

These URLs contain additional information that gets recorded, helping you understand which marketing campaigns are working and where your traffic is coming from.

If you’re running email campaigns, online ads, or any kind of promotions, tracking URLs, along with a reliable link tracking tool, are a practical way to measure their impact and make informed decisions about your marketing strategy.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to create and use tracking URLs effectively to improve your marketing game. Let’s dive in!

What is a tracking URL?

A tracking URL is a web link that has been modified with additional parameters or tags to collect specific data about user interactions with it. When a user clicks on a tracking link, the attached parameters are sent to analytics tools or marketing platforms, allowing businesses to monitor and analyze various aspects of user engagement, such as the source of traffic, the success of different marketing channels, and the performance of specific campaigns.

Tracking URLs plays a crucial role in helping businesses make data-driven decisions to optimize their online marketing strategies.

What are tracking parameters?

Tracking parameters are specific pieces of information added to a URL to collect data about user interactions with that URL. These parameters help in tracking and analyzing various aspects of user behavior, especially in the context of digital marketing and web analytics. Common tracking parameters include:

  • Source: Indicates where the traffic is coming from. For example, a source parameter might specify whether the traffic is from an email newsletter, a social media post, or a paid advertisement.
  • Medium: Specifies the type of traffic source within the broader category. For instance, under the source “social,” the medium parameter might differentiate between traffic from Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.
  • Campaign: Identifies the specific marketing campaign associated with the URL. This helps in tracking the performance of individual campaigns, such as a holiday sale or a product launch.
  • Term: Commonly used in search engine marketing, it provides details about the keywords or search terms that led to the click on the URL.
  • Content: Differentiates between different versions or content variations of the same URL. This can be helpful when conducting A/B testing or tracking the performance of different ad creatives.
  • UTM Parameters: UTMs (Urchin Tracking Module) are a standardized way of implementing tracking parameters. They include utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content, making it easier to work with tracking data across various platforms.

Branded Links vs. Short Links: Which is Right for Your Brand?

Arslan Jadoon
6 minutes

Have you ever shared an interesting post, recommended a funny video, or perhaps even critiqued an article that missed the mark? We’ve all been there. But what you might not realize is that the way you share these online treasures can significantly impact your brand.

If you’ve been using plain, generic short links to share content, it’s time to take a closer look. By doing so, you could inadvertently be promoting other brands instead of your own.

We’re going to cut through the noise and discuss the difference between branded vs. short links. We’ll help you understand the implications of your choice and how it can affect your brand’s online identity. So, let’s get straight to it!

A short link, also known as a short URL, is a compressed version of a long web address or URL. Short links are created to simplify lengthy URLs, making them easier to share, remember, and use, especially in contexts where character limits are a concern, such as social media or printed materials.

Short links typically redirect users to the original, longer URL when clicked. They are especially useful for sharing links on platforms like Twitter, where character limits for a single tweet are in place. Instead of using a long and cumbersome URL, you can generate a short link that directs users to the intended web page.

A branded link, also known as a custom short link or a vanity URL, is a type of shortened URL that includes a brand’s or organization’s name or a custom keyword as part of the link. Unlike generic short links that use a random combination of characters and numbers, branded links are customized to reflect the brand’s identity, making them more recognizable and trustworthy to users.

Branded links are a fantastic choice for businesses and individuals looking to enhance their online branding, improve user engagement, and create a polished and trustworthy online presence.

Branded links can indeed offer several advantages, especially when it comes to strengthening your brand identity and increasing user trust. They are valuable for businesses and individuals looking to create a cohesive online presence and improve user engagement.

The choice between branded links and short links eventually depends on your specific goals and the context in which you plan to use them. Let’s explore the benefits of each:

  • Strong brand identity: Branded links reinforce your brand identity, incorporating your brand name or a custom keyword. This can boost brand recognition and user trust.
  • Higher click-through rates: Branded links often have higher click-through rates as they appear more trustworthy and relevant to users.
  • Enhanced user experience: They offer a user-friendly and memorable link, making it easier to recognize and share.
  • Consistency: Branded links maintain a consistent brand image across different online platforms.
  • Analytics: You can track the performance of branded links and gain valuable insights into user engagement.
  • Conciseness: Short links are compact and ideal for contexts with character limits like social media or text messages.
  • Space-saving: They save space in printed materials, enhancing aesthetics and usability.
  • Universal use: Short links are versatile and can be used for various types of content.

The choice depends on your priorities:

Branded Links: If strengthening your brand identity, increasing trust, and improving user recognition are important to you, branded links are an excellent choice. They excel in marketing campaigns and content sharing where branding matters.

Short Links: If brevity and saving space are paramount, short links are suitable, especially in platforms with character constraints. They shine when the focus is on the content rather than the link.

Let’s take a look at how some of the most popular brands use branded links to their advantage:

  1. The New York Times – nyti.ms

The renowned newspaper, The New York Times, simplifies sharing long article URLs on social media and beyond by using the branded link nyti.ms. This branded link not only shortens the URL but also reinforces the brand’s identity with every click.

When it comes to sports and lifestyle, Nike is a household name. They utilize the branded link swoo.sh to create a memorable link for their products and promotions. This reinforces the Nike brand with every shared link.

E-commerce giant Amazon opts for the branded link amzn.to to shorten product URLs. This not only saves space in printed materials but also keeps the focus on their products rather than the URL itself.

LinkedIn, a powerful tool for professional networking, is more than just a digital resume or a list of your connections. It’s like your virtual business card and the gateway to countless career opportunities.

Your LinkedIn profile URL might seem insignificant, but it’s crucial to your online identity. It’s your online address, a brief snapshot of who you are, and a chance to make a strong impression.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to create a LinkedIn vanity URL, giving your online profile a memorable identity.

Let’s learn how to create a LinkedIn URL that makes your professional profile stand out.

How to Create a Custom Short URL?

Arslan Jadoon

Do you want to create your own custom short URL for your website links? Just like we use “rplg.co” for our own branded short URLs, you can do the same for yours.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the straightforward process of crafting your custom short URLs.

Elevate your blog’s accessibility, streamline your links, and make sharing content a breeze with personalized web addresses that resonate with your audience.

What is a custom short URL?

A custom short URL, also known as a branded or vanity URL, is a shorter and customized version of a longer web address (URL). It’s designed to be easy to remember, share, and recognize.

Custom short URLs typically incorporate a brand’s name, a relevant keyword, or any other chosen text to create a web address that is more user-friendly and aligned with the entity’s identity.

Prominent brands and organizations leverage custom short URLs for streamlined online engagement. The New York Times employs “nyti.ms,” Coca-Cola opts for “cokeurl.com,” WWF uses “wwf.to,” the United Nations relies on “un.org,” and HubSpot chooses “hubs.ly.” These concise links enhance branding and simplify sharing across digital platforms.

Custom short URLs offer several benefits:

  • Memorability: They are easier to remember, making it simple for users to type or recall the link.
  • Branding: Custom short URLs reinforce brand identity and can include brand names or keywords.
  • User Experience: Shorter URLs improve the user experience by reducing clutter and enhancing readability.
  • Tracking: URL shortening services offer analytics, allowing you to track click-through rates and user engagement.
  • Social Media: On platforms with character limits, like Twitter, custom short URLs save space for your message.

How to create a custom short URL using Replug?

Replug is a URL shortener and branding tool that simplifies link management. It allows users to create custom short URLs, reinforcing brand identity and optimizing online marketing. With user-friendly domain customization and strong connectivity features, Replug streamlines the process of enhancing your online presence and sharing branded links.

To create a custom short URL using Replug, first add your custom domain:

Important note: By default, Replug generates links using our default shortener domain, rplg.co.

However, you have the option to enhance your branding and domain reputation by incorporating a custom domain. This allows you to use branded domains in your ads, social link-tracking campaigns, and email communications.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Access custom domains

  • Open your Replug dashboard.
  • Navigate to “Settings” and select “Custom Domains” from the dropdown menu.

Step 2: Add a new domain

  • Click on “Add Domain” to initiate the process of creating your custom short URL.

Step 3: Connect the custom domain

On the next screen, provide the following details:

  • Domain URL: This is your branded or custom domain.
  • 404 redirect URL: Specify where users should be directed if they land on a 404 error page.
  • Branded domain: This redirects users to the designated URL when they visit the root address of your brand’s domain.

Afterward, click the “Connect” button as shown on the screen.

Note: Once you have added your domain to the platform, the next step is to point CNAME in your domain registrar’s DNS.  If you would like to redirect your root domain, please try adding @ or www. Some of the registrars do not allow the @ option, for that, you will have to add www as a HOST value.

Step 4: Manage your custom domain

After clicking “Connect,” your custom domain will be successfully added to your Replug account.

You can check the connectivity status, edit domain settings, or delete domains as needed.

How URL Shortener Works: A Quick Guide

Arslan Jadoon
4 minutes

URL shorteners work by simplifying long, unwieldy web links into concise, user-friendly versions. They accomplish this by assigning a distinct code to each lengthy URL. This code is usually a combination of letters, numbers, and sometimes special characters.

When someone clicks on the shortened link, they are redirected to the original, longer URL. This redirection is handled by the URL shortening service’s server, which maintains a database of these code-to-URL mappings.

Additionally, many URL shorteners offer analytics features that provide valuable insights into the performance of the shortened links. Users can track metrics such as the number of clicks, geographic locations of users, and referral sources. This information can be particularly useful for marketing campaigns, social media sharing, or any scenario where understanding link engagement is essential.

Let’s discover what URL shorteners are and how they work!

What is a URL Shortener?

A URL shortener is a tool that takes a long URL and turns it into a shorter one. This can be useful for a number of reasons. For example, if you want to share a link on social media, a shorter URL will be easier to type and fit in the character limit.

Additionally, URL shorteners can be used to track the number of clicks on a link. This can be helpful for marketing purposes or for simply keeping track of how popular a particular link is.

There are a number of different URL shorteners available, both free and paid. Some popular options include Replug, Bitly, and TinyURL.

It is important to note that URL shorteners are not always secure. When you shorten a URL, you are essentially giving the shortener control over that URL. This means that the shortener could potentially track your clicks or even redirect you to a malicious website. For this reason, it is important to only use reputable URL shorteners and to be careful about the links you click on.

How does a URL shortener work?

A URL shortener works by taking a long and often complex web address (URL) and transforming it into a shorter, more manageable link.

Here’s a step-by-step explanation of how it operates:

  1. Long link: Imagine you have a really long web link. It’s like this: “https://www.example.com/articles/how-url-shorteners-work-explained-in-detail.”
  2. URL shortener tool: Now, to make it shorter and more manageable, you turn to a URL shortener service. Think of it as a digital tool that specializes in simplifying web links. Some popular ones include Replug and Bitly.
  3. Input: When you visit their website, you’ll typically find a box that says “Paste your long link here” or something similar. Here’s where you paste your lengthy URL, like the one above.
  4. Shortened link: After you paste it and click a button, the URL shortener works its magic. It transforms that long link into something compact and user-friendly. For example, your long link becomes “https://rplg.co/3ABCxyz.”
  5. Customization (optional): Many URL shorteners offer the option to create a custom domain. This means you can use your own domain name (like yourbrand.com) instead of the shortener’s domain. You can also personalize permalinks to have a more branded and memorable link structure. For example, instead of the automatically generated code, you could have “yourbrand.com/tiktok-seo.”
  6. Personalized domain: With a custom domain, you can create links that align perfectly with your brand identity. This not only adds professionalism to your shortened URLs but also makes them more trustworthy and recognizable to your audience.
  7. Sharing: Now, you have this shorter link that’s easier to share. For instance, in a tweet, you can comfortably fit “https://rplg.co/3ABCxyz,” whereas the long link would be too cumbersome for a character-limited platform.
  8. Optional stats: Some URL shorteners provide additional features. They can show you how many times your shortened link has been clicked and where those clicks are coming from. This is particularly useful for tracking the performance of links in marketing campaigns or social media posts.
  9. Instant result: When someone clicks on your shortened link, they’re swiftly redirected to the original, longer web page. It’s like a shortcut that saves them from having to type out or remember the lengthy URL.

How to Redirect a URL to Another URL?

Arslan Jadoon

Redirecting a URL to another destination is a fundamental skill in web development and online communication. Whether you’re rebranding a website, updating content, or optimizing user experience, the ability to seamlessly guide users from one web address to another is invaluable.

In this guide, we’ll explore various methods and step-by-step instructions on how to effectively redirect URLs, ensuring your online presence remains agile and user-friendly.

What is a URL redirect?

A URL redirect is a way to send users from one URL to another. This can be done for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • To improve the user experience by sending users to a more relevant or up-to-date page.
  • To prevent broken links by redirecting users to a new page that has replaced the old one.
  • To track website traffic by redirecting users to a different page depending on where they came from.

2 main types of URL redirects:

There are two main types of URL redirects: 301 redirects and 302 redirects.

A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect, which means that the old URL will no longer be used and all traffic should be directed to the new URL.

A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect, which means that the old URL may be used again in the future.

URL redirects can be set up by website administrators or by using a third-party service.

How to redirect a URL to another URL?

Redirecting a URL to another URL can be done using various methods, depending on your specific needs and the technology stack you are using.

Here are some common methods and steps for each:

  • HTTP Redirects (Status Codes 301 and 302)
  • Using JavaScript for Client-Side Redirect
  • Using Meta Refresh Tag (HTML Meta Tag)
  • Using Server-Side Scripting (e.g., PHP)
  • Using URL Rewrite Rules (Apache mod_rewrite or Nginx)
  • Using a Content Management System (CMS)
  • Using a URL shortener

Now, let’s explain each of these methods step by step:

Method 1: HTTP redirects (status codes 301 and 302)

Step 1: Open your web server configuration file (e.g., Apache’s “.htaccess” for Apache servers) or use a control panel like cPanel.

Step 2: Add the following line to redirect the old URL to the new URL:

how-to-redirect-a-url-to-another-url

Replace “/old-page.html” with the path to the old URL and http://example.com/new-page.html with the new destination URL.

Step 3: Save the configuration file.

Step 4: The 301 redirect informs search engines that the old URL has permanently moved to the new URL.

Method 2: Using JavaScript for client-side redirect

Step 1: Insert the following JavaScript code in the <head> section of your HTML document:

how-to-redirect-a-url-to-another-url

Replace “http://example.com/new-page.html” with the URL you want to redirect to.

Step 2: When a user accesses the old URL, they will be automatically redirected to the new URL.

Method 3: Using meta refresh tag (HTML meta tag)

Step 1: Insert the following HTML <meta> tag in the <head> section of your HTML document:

how-to-redirect-a-url-to-another-url

Replace “http://example.com/new-page.html” with the new destination URL.

Step 2: The content attribute specifies the time delay (in seconds) before the redirect occurs. In this example, it’s set to 0, which means an immediate redirect.

Method 4: Using server-side scripting (e.g., PHP)

Step 1: Create a PHP file for the old URL (e.g., old-page.php).

Step 2: Add the following PHP code to the PHP file:

how-to-redirect-a-url

Replace “http://example.com/new-page.html” with the new destination URL.

Step 3: This PHP script sends an HTTP header to the browser, triggering a 301 redirect to the new URL.

Method 5: Using URL rewrite rules (Apache mod_rewrite or Nginx)

Step 1: For Apache, create or edit a .htaccess file in your website’s directory. For Nginx, edit your server block configuration.

Step 2: Add rewrite rules to redirect URLs. For example, for Apache with mod_rewrite:

how-to-redirect-a-url

Replace “old-page\.html$” with the old URL pattern and http://example.com/new-page.html with the new destination URL.

Step 3: Save the configuration file.

Step 4: These rules will redirect requests for the old URL to the new URL with a 301 status code.

Method 6: Using a content management system (CMS):

If your website is built on a CMS like WordPress, Joomla, or Drupal, there are usually plugins or settings within the CMS that allow you to set up URL redirects without directly editing server configuration files.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to redirect a URL to another URL in WordPress!
